How to check on the advertizing companies.

1) The official bodies like the Consumers Association, Registrar of Companies, specific industry unions and other resources of your resident country enable job candidates to check out the background of the hiring company.

2) Do not disclose personal details, bank account number nor anything that might be used for identity theft.

3) Verify the company exists and the representative is a true staff. Call the company’s public listed telephone number, request the operator to transfer the line to the said personnel.

4) Be wary of spam email providers and snail mail spammers. If you are compelled to fill out a form, omit one essential out so that the spammers’ cannot get to you. If the company is sincere in hiring, the staff will contact you via telephone.

5) Check the references for possible scams. Official addresses should look respectable. There should not be any free email providers since NO reputable organizations will dare to use free email addys.

There are ruthless crooks who target the down and out job seekers. They pose as advertizers of jobs and proceed to scam candidates with fantastic business opportunities that often involve capital investments of large sums of money. Another form of bait is the pyramid marketing ploy which draws in legitimate workers for questionable profiteering distribution.

The crooks who execute the least amount of work but inflict the greatest amount of damage are the identity thefts. This category of white collar criminals create bogus credit cards, take out loans, run up high phone bills and incur debts using the fake identity.

When you are meeting a buyer for your product, it is wise to arrange a meeting at a public place. If you have no choice but to receive the potential buyer at your home, then ensure that there is at least one other adult present, for your safety.

Do not place trust in the buyer and leave your goods in his/her hands for any amount of time. Thieves often execute daylight robbery by dashing off with the goods.

How to avoid online job scams. Part 1. Craigslist & Monster scammed.

How does a job seeker discern from a cursory glance that a job offer is a scam? There are some common little red flags to raise the alarm.

1) If the advertizement contains grammar, spelling or other errors, don’t bother to respond to it.

2) The advertizer’s email addy should reflect the hirer’s organization. One can imagine the level of professionalism associated with a free email provider.

3) The ad should not ask for upfront payment for subscription before releasing the details for application.

4) The terms of contract should be clearly stated. The candidate should not bear any financial costs for application.

5) Do not post resumes with your full address online or email them around. The data maybe mis-used for credit card scams. The online job agency,  Monster.com has been hacked. The investigation is posted here. (Aug 17 2007)

6) You need a confirmed appointment before filling in your personal bank account number.

7) Always verify the company by checking it online and using other collaborative measures. Google and Yahoo are two popular search engines which will dig up the related links for you.
